BACKGROUND: Mutations in the KCNJ5 (potassium inwardly rectifying channel subfamily J member 5) gene, encoding an inwardly rectifying potassium channel, can drive aldosterone overproduction in a subset of aldosterone-producing adenomas and in familial hyperaldosteronism type III.
