Sexually reproducing organisms make haploid gametes-oocytes and spermatocytes-that combine during fertilization to make an embryo. While both gametes contain similar DNA content, oocytes contain the bulk of the cytoplasm including maternally supplied mRNAs and proteins required prior to zygotic gene activation.
