BACKGROUND: TFPI (tissue factor pathway inhibitor) inhibits the initiation of blood coagulation. TFPIα (TFPI alpha isoform), the only alternatively spliced TFPI isoform in platelets, is abundant in placenta and uniquely inhibits prothrombinase (FXa [activated factor X]-FVa [activated factor V]).
