BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a long-term, progressive, and irreversible pulmonary interstitial disease. The activation of Smad family member 2 (Smad2) and Smad3 transcription factors by transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) is a critical event in the pathogenesis of IPF.
