The pathogenesis of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke like episodes (MELAS) syndrome has not been fully elucidated. The m.3243A > G mutation which is responsible for 80% MELAS patients affects proteins with undetermined functions.
