HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) interacts with cell surface receptors and induces membrane fusion to enter cells and initiate infection. HIV-1 Env on virions comprises trimers of the gp120 and gp41 subunits. The polar region (PR) in the N-terminus of gp41 is composed of 17 conserved residues, including seven polar amino acids.
