Pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM) was originally described based on keen morphologic analysis identifying a group of melanocytic tumors sharing heavily pigmented epithelioid melanocytes. It is defined as heavily pigmented epithelioid, spindled, and dendritic melanocytes with characteristic vesicular nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and melanophages.
