The X-linked Pig-a gene encodes an enzyme required for the biosynthesis of glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors. Pig-a mutant cells fail to synthesize GPI and to express GPI-anchored protein markers (e.g., CD90) on their surface.
