BACKGROUND: Due to the significant risk of developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), the use of carbamazepine is not recommended in patients carrying the human leukocyte antigen B (HLA-B) *15:02 allele.
