The homotypic fusion of endoplasmic reticulum membranes is catalyzed by the atlastin GTPase. The mechanism involves trans-dimerization between GTPase heads and a favorable crossover conformational shift, catalyzed by GTP hydrolysis, that converts the dimer from a "prefusion" to "postfusion" state.
