Lipid A anchors the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the outer membrane and is usually composed of a hexa-acylated diglucosamine backbone. Burkholderia cenocepacia, an opportunistic pathogen, produces a mixture of tetra- and penta-acylated lipid A.
