As stated by the prevailing amyloid cascade hypothesis, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is caused by the aggregation and cerebral deposition of long amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) species, which are released from a C-terminal amyloid precursor protein fragment by γ-secretase.
