BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Through a genome-wide linkage scan, an Icelandic genetic research group identified two new genes associated with ischemic stroke: the 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (ALOX5AP) gene and the phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene.
