Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains carrying a mutation in the clathrin heavy chain gene (CHC1) are genetically unstable and give rise to heterogeneous populations of cells. Manifestations of the instability include increases in genome copy number as well as compensatory genetic changes that allow better growing clathrin-deficient cells to take over the population.
