Human tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) was cloned and sequenced from an A2058 human melanoma cell cDNA library. When the sequence was compared with that of human TIMP-1 at both the nucleotide and deduced amino acid levels, the homology appeared closer at the protein level than at the nucleotide level, suggesting that these inhibitors diverged early in the evolution of this gene family.
