BACKGROUND: Tumor cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) develop cellular properties leading to stroma invasion and intravasation. We have previously shown in a xenograft breast cancer model that blocking osteopontin (OPN), a secreted phosphoprotein, decreases EMT.
