BACKGROUND: Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) catalyzes the methylation of thiopurine drugs such as azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine. Several mutations in the TPMT gene correlate with low enzyme activity and adverse effects such as myelotoxicity.
