Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) primarily infect activated CD4(+) T cells but can infect macrophages. Surprisingly, ex vivo tetramer-sorted SIV-specific CD8(+) T cells that eliminated and suppressed viral replication in SIV-infected CD4(+) T cells failed to do so in SIV-infected macrophages.
