BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive tumor of serosal surfaces that is closely associated with asbestos exposure which induces oxidative stress. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a rate-limiting enzyme of heme degradation, plays a protective role against oxidative stress.
