The genetic basis for gastric and pancreatic cancer is largely undetermined. These cancers are overrepresented in hereditary non polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), inherited cancer syndrome attributed to germline mutations primarily in the MSH2, MLH1 and MSH6 genes.
