Inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), the rate-limiting enzyme for de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides, is required for lymphocyte proliferation. Inhibition of IMPDH by mycophenolic acid (MPA) constitutes part of an immunosuppressive therapy in kidney allograft recipients.
