Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is synthesized as a membrane-anchored protein, known as proHB-EGF. ProHB-EGF is cleaved by metalloproteases through a process referred to as 'ectodomain shedding', resulting in the formation of soluble HB-EGF.
