Cell culture techniques were used to clarify the histogenesis of giant-cell tumor of bone. Even after passage, nearly all of the mononuclear cells possessed tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase and receptors for eel calcitonin, which are both phenotypic markers for osteoclasts.
