11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) catalyzes the interconversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol in a NADPH dependent manner. Excess cortisol or 11β-HSD1 leads to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.
