KIT mutations are known to occur in ~15% of chronic sun damaged cutaneous, mucosal, and acral melanomas. Melanomas with demonstrated activating mutations in KIT or platelet-derived growth factor receptor A (PDGFRA) may benefit from treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
