A yeast nuclear gene (ATP10) is reported whose product is essential for the assembly of a functional mitochondrial ATPase complex. Mutations in ATP10 induce a loss of rutamycin sensitivity in the mitochondrial ATPase but do not affect respiratory enzymes.
