Mammalian thioredoxin reductases (TrxRs) contain selenium as selenocysteine (Sec) in the C-terminal redox center -Gly-Cys-Sec-Gly-OH to reduce Trx and other substrates; a Sec-to-Cys substitution in mammalian TrxR yields an almost inactive enzyme.
