Na(+) absorption and K(+) secretion in the distal segments of the nephron are modulated by the tubular flow rate. Epithelial Na(+) channels (ENaC), composed of α-, β-, and γ-subunits respond to laminar shear stress (LSS) with an increase in open probability.
