To test whether severe ascorbic acid deficiency in macrophages affects progression of early atherosclerosis, we used fetal liver cell transplantation to generate atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE(-/-)) mice that selectively lacked the ascorbate transporter (SVCT2) in hematopoietic cells, including macrophages.
