SalM is a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase enzyme from the marine actinomycete Salinispora tropica that is involved in the biosynthesis of chloroethylmalonyl-CoA, a novel halogenated polyketide synthase extender unit of the proteasome inhibitor salinosporamide A.
