The R620W polymorphism in the protein-tyrosine-phosphatase nonreceptor type 22 gene (PTPN22) confers susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D) and other autoimmune diseases. This polymorphism is reportedly nonpolymorphic in the Asian population.
