The universally conserved eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF), eIF1A, plays multiple roles throughout initiation: it stimulates eIF2/GTP/Met-tRNA(i)(Met) attachment to 40S ribosomal subunits, scanning, start codon selection and subunit joining.
