BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Pneumocystis jiroveci (also known as P. carinii) causes fatal pneumonia in patients with AIDS and other immunocompromised patients. Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim + sulphamethoxazole, TMP-SMZ) is the drug of choice for treatment and prophylaxis.
