Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex genetic disorder in which the HLA region contributes most to the genetic risk. HLA-DRB1 molecules containing the amino acid sequence QKRAA/QRRAA/RRRAA (ie, HLA-DRB1*0101, *0102, *0401, *0404, *0405, *0408, *0410, *1001 and *1402) at position 70-74 in the third hypervariable region of the DRB1 chain are associated with susceptibility to RA.
