Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are most often associated with oncogenic mutations of the KIT gene resulting in activation of the tyrosine kinase receptor KIT. Familial GIST syndrome based on a hereditary predisposition to develop GIST owing to a germline mutation is exceedingly rare.
