Late allograft dysfunction is a significant problem following liver transplantation and its pathogenesis is uncertain. HLA-C is the major inhibitory ligand for killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) that regulate the cytotoxic activity of natural killer (NK) cells.
