Gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase (GCL) is the rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione (GSH) synthesis. A GAG-repeat polymorphism in the 5' UTR of the gene coding for the catalytic subunit of GCL (GCLC) has been associated with altered GSH levels in vitro.
