Glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH). The GCL heterodimer is encoded by two genes: GLCLC, which directs synthesis of the catalytic subunit, and GLCLR, which encodes the regulatory subunit.
