Blood glucose homeostasis is achieved by the regulation of insulin and glucagon secretion from the pancreatic islet beta- and alpha-cells. Diabetes mellitus, which comprises a heterogeneous group of hyperglycaemic disorders, results mainly from inadequate mass and function of islet beta-cells.
