Nikkomycins are highly potent inhibitors of chitin synthase. The nikkomycin biosynthetic gene cluster has been cloned from Streptomyces asochromogenes. Two cytochrome P450 monooxygenase genes (sanQ, sanH) and one ferredoxin gene (sanI) were found in the cluster.
