Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is an important physiologic regulator of cell growth and differentiation. TGF-beta has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of quiescent hematopoietic stem cells and stimulate the differentiation of late progenitors to erythroid and myeloid cells.
