The terminal sugar sialic acid (Sia) plays a pivotal role in cell-cell interaction and recognition. A prerequisite for the biosynthesis of sialoglycoconjugates is the activation of Sia to cytidine monophosphate-Sia (CMP-Sia), by CMP-Sia synthetases (CMP-Sia-syn).
