The haloacid dehalogenase of the 1,2-dichloroethane-utilizing bacterium Xanthobacter autotrophicus GJ10 was purified from a mutant with an eightfold increase in expression of the enzyme. The mutant was obtained by selecting for enhanced resistance to monobromoacetate.
