A dominant mutation in the gene for copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is the most frequent cause of the inherited form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Mutant SOD1 provokes progressive degeneration of motor neurons by an unidentified acquired toxicity.
