Loss of mtDNA by the petite-negative yeast Kluyveromyces lactis is lethal (rho(o)-lethality). However, mutations in the alpha, beta and gamma subunits of F(1)-ATPase can suppress lethality by increasing intramitochondrial hydrolysis of ATP.
