The mechanisms that govern homeostasis of complex systems have been elusive but can be illuminated by mutations that disrupt system behavior. Mutations in the gene encoding the kinase WNK4 cause pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHAII), a syndrome featuring hypertension and hyperkalemia.
