During tissue repair, excess fibroblasts are eliminated by apoptosis. This physiologic process limits fibrosis and restores normal anatomic patterns. Replicating physiologic apoptosis associated with tissue repair, fibroblasts incorporated into type I collagen matrices undergo apoptosis in response to collagen matrix contraction.
