BACKGROUND: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C-->T polymorphism is heterogeneously distributed worldwide, with the highest and lowest frequencies of the T allele in Mexico and Africa, respectively, and a south-to-north gradient in Europe.
