Cultivation of phenotypically stable auricular chondrocytes will have applications in autologous chondrocyte transplantation and reconstructive surgery of cartilage. Chondrocytes grown in monolayer culture rapidly dedifferentiate assuming a fibroblast-like morphology and lose their cartilage-specific pattern of gene expression.
