Stopped-flow fluorescence spectroscopy has been used to study the reaction of human alpha-thrombin with recombinant hirudin variant 1 (rhir) at 37 degrees C and an ionic strength of 0.125 M. A 35% enhancement in intrinsic fluorescence accompanied formation of the thrombin-rhir complex.
